Temple life: the basics
Temple customs · Explained
What does giving alms mean?
Tak bat (ตักบาตร) means offering food or other suitable necessities to monks, often on their morning alms round. It supports the monastic community and is a form of merit-making.
Can visitors join? Generally yes, including non-Buddhists, if they participate respectfully. Ask a local host or temple what is appropriate, prepare clean suitable food, wait quietly, and offer it without obstructing the procession. Women should avoid physical contact with monks and follow the receiving method indicated. Do not hand cash directly to a monk or stage photographs.
Standing: The hand gestures and objects identify the episode or teaching; not every standing image means the same thing.
Seated: Often meditation or enlightenment, depending on hand posture.
Reclining: Often represents the Buddha’s final passing into parinirvana. Wat Pho’s example is about 46 metres long, with mother-of-pearl feet showing 108 auspicious symbols.
Temple life · Animals
Cats, dogs and other temple animals
Some temples shelter or informally care for community cats and dogs, and a few keep ponds with turtles or fish. This is not a guaranteed attraction at any particular wat. Observe from a distance, never feed without permission, and never approach unfamiliar dogs, especially around puppies or food. Temple animals are not props. Be cautious of any site where wild animals are kept for tourist contact.
Before you go
Verify the practical details
Opening hours, entry fees, dress rules, monk-chat and meditation schedules change often and are not listed here. Confirm them with the temple or an official source. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where indicated, and keep your head lower than Buddha images.
Histories are labelled Documented, Tradition or Folklore. Opening hours, fees and programmes change, so confirm with each temple before you go. Photographs are credited to their photographers.

Boat noodles: a Bangkok tradition, one little bowl at a time
Victory Monument · Phaya Thai
Bangkok once moved along its canals. Noodle vendors cooked and served from narrow boats, passing small bowls to customers on the banks. The small portions were practical on the water, and became a tradition even after the shops moved onto land.
🍜
Why the broth is different
Boat noodles have an intensely seasoned, aromatic broth with cinnamon, star anise and other spices. Traditional nam tok versions use pork or beef blood to deepen and thicken the soup. Many shops also offer clear broth. Look for sliced meat, meatballs, morning glory and crunchy pork rinds.
🥢
How to order
Choose moo (pork) or nuea (beef), then your noodle: sen lek (thin flat rice), sen mee (fine rice vermicelli), sen yai (wide rice), or ba mee (egg noodles, where available). Ask for nam tok (rich broth), nam sai (clear), or haeng (dry noodles). For no blood, say mai sai lueat (ไม่ใส่เลือด).
🥣
Order several small bowls
Start with two or three bowls per person, try different noodles and proteins, then order more. At traditional shops, the empty bowls stack up on the table and may be counted for your bill. Bring small cash notes; prices and serving sizes vary by shop.
📍
Where to try it
Boat Noodle Alley runs beside Khlong Samsen near Victory Monument. Take BTS to Victory Monument and walk toward the canal on the Phahonyothin side. Look for Baan Kuay Tiew Ruathong, Payak Boat Noodle and Pranakorn Noodle Restaurant. Toy Kuay Teow Ruea is another option near Ratchawithi Soi 18.
Boat noodles are part of central Thailand's canal-food heritage, including Ayutthaya and the Bangkok region. Check individual shop hours and ingredients before visiting. Pork, beef, offal, fish sauce and blood may be present; ask if you have dietary restrictions.
